How Much Does a Drug Test Cost?

At LabX, an at-home drug test is $89 for a urine 12-panel or $99 for a fingerstick blood 12-panel. Adding full LC-MS/MS lab confirmation of 76 drugs costs $89, for a total of $178 (urine) or $188 (blood). Drug-test pricing elsewhere is often harder to pin down, so here is what drives the cost and what you actually pay for.

What drives the price of a drug test

  • Specimen. Urine is the most common and usually the least expensive. Blood costs a little more but is harder to tamper with. Hair tests look back further and typically cost more.
  • Screen versus confirmation. A screen is presumptive and inexpensive. Confirmation by LC-MS/MS identifies the exact drug and costs more, because it uses mass spectrometry.
  • Collection. A mail-in kit avoids collection-site fees. Observed collection, whether at a site or by video, adds cost but makes a result more defensible.
  • Program requirements. DOT-regulated tests require a federal custody form and Medical Review Officer review, which add cost (LabX does not currently offer MRO review).
  • Volume. Employers testing regularly lower their per-test cost with prepaid bundles.

Screen or confirmation: what are you paying for?

A 12-panel screen tells you whether a drug class may be present. It is the right first step for most people, and a negative screen is usually the end of the story.

Confirmation matters when a result will be acted on β€” for a job, a custody arrangement, a treatment program or peace of mind. LC-MS/MS confirmation names each drug, which rules out the cross-reactions that can make a presumptive screen look positive. Our at-home confirmation tests all 76 drugs on the panel, not only the ones that flag.

What the $89 and $99 screens include

Both screens test for twelve substances; what changes is the sample.

  • Urine 12-panel ($89): amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, opiates, oxycodone, 6-MAM (heroin), fentanyl, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, PCP, alcohol and marijuana (THC).
  • Blood 12-panel ($99): the same list without THC, plus MDMA, with alcohol reported as ETS.

Every order includes the kit, return shipping to our laboratory, laboratory review of the screen and a private online result. Many cheaper panels still leave out fentanyl; ours includes it on both specimens.

Urine or blood: is the extra $10 worth it?

Choose urine when you want the longest detection window for most substances, including marijuana, or when you are matching an employer’s standard urine program.

Choose blood when tampering is a concern. A fingerstick blood sample is far harder to dilute or substitute, it needs no observer, and it is more stable in transit. Blood reflects more recent use, so it is a better fit for questions about the last day or two than about the last few weeks.

Budgeting for workplace drug testing

For employers, the cost of a program is more than the price of each test. Plan for:

  • Kits on the shelf. Prepaid kit packs keep a supply ready for new hires, random selections and post-accident events.
  • Collection. Observed collection by video (TeleTest) or an in-office fingerstick avoids sending employees to an outside site.
  • Confirmation. With confirmations enabled, non-negative results are confirmed at $25 per positive drug, so you only pay for confirmation when a screen flags.
  • Policy and records. A written policy and clean records are what make a result defensible; the testing is only one part.

See employer drug testing and random testing programs for how accounts are set up.

Costs to check before you buy anywhere

  • Is a collection-site or appointment fee added on top of the test price?
  • Is confirmation included, optional, or billed later as a surcharge?
  • Is shipping both ways included for a mail-in kit?
  • Are Medical Review Officer fees separate for workplace testing?
  • Is there a membership or subscription?

Common questions

How much does an at-home drug test cost at LabX?
A urine 12-panel is $89 and a fingerstick blood 12-panel is $99. Adding full LC-MS/MS confirmation brings the total to $178 or $188.
How much does drug test confirmation cost?
For an at-home test, full LC-MS/MS confirmation of 76 drugs is $89. For employer accounts with confirmations enabled, non-negative results are confirmed at $25 per positive drug.
Is confirmation required?
No. It is optional for at-home tests and recommended whenever a result will be acted on.
Is shipping included?
Standard shipping is included and ships in the order it comes up in our queue. USPS Priority Mail is an optional $25 upgrade: order during business hours (Mon–Sat, 8am–5pm ET) and we ship it the same day, otherwise the next business day. How fast it travels after that is up to the carrier.
Why is a blood test more expensive than urine?
A fingerstick blood sample is more stable and much harder to dilute or adulterate, and it costs slightly more to collect and process.
Do you charge a subscription or membership?
No. You pay per kit.
How can employers lower their cost per test?
By buying prepaid kit packs and keeping a card on file for reorders.
Do I need to see a doctor about my results?
Yes, if you have questions about a result, a medication or your health, review it with a licensed physician. A positive result is not a diagnosis, and prescription medicines are a common reason for one. If someone is in danger, call 911.
